Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac

“Zevin is just a great writer…[She] gets all the details right.” —San Francisco Chronicle

from the publisher:

If Naomi had picked tails, she would have won the coin toss.

She wouldn’t have had to go back for the yearbook camera, and she wouldn’t have hit her head on the steps.

She wouldn’t have woken up in an ambulance with amnesia.

She certainly would have remembered her boyfriend, Ace.

She might even have remembered why she fell in love with him in the first place.

She would understand why her best friend, Will, keeps calling her “Chief.” She’d get all his inside jokes, and maybe he wouldn’t be so frustrated with her for forgetting things she can’t possibly remember.

She’d know about her mom’s new family.

She’d know about her dad’s fiancée.

She wouldn’t have to spend her junior year relearning all the French she supposedly knew already.

She never would have met James, the boy with the questionable past and the even fuzzier future, who tells her he once wanted to kiss her.

She wouldn’t have wanted to kiss him back.

But Naomi picked heads.

  1. I had been missing a good book for a long period of time – almost a year! – and I was so pleased when I started to dive into this book. It’s quirky and brilliant, really a lovely read. You make stories so interesting and give the reader something to look forward too with each turn of the page. It was also very interesting read into some of the research you conducted to complete the novel. I could tell you (and hopefully everyone involved) had a fun time with the book. So thank you very much, and I can’t wait to read more of your work. 🙂

    1. Thank you for your rich and thoughtful compliment. Years later, I still miss some of the characters from Memoirs. However, the process wasn’t quite as much fun as you might think! The first draft of the book, for instance, didn’t have Will or James. The only thing that exists from the first draft is Ace (though he had a different name), Naomi’s food diary, and the title. In any case, it took me a long time to get the book right. Thanks again for writing and reading, Gabrielle

  2. i don’t know why but i fell in love with the character James. i kinda hoped as i was reading the book that Naomi would of stayed with James but sadly that didn’t happen. Over all i loved this book its definitely a book im going to have to buy to keep in my book shelve. Thanks for writing such a good book.

  3. I just finished reading Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac. I really like it, and will be writing a review on my blog soon. I wanted to ask you for an interview when I realized it was published in 2007. I realize you probably think it’s been too many years, but I still have some questions I would love to ask you. Would that be possible? I would love to publish your answers on my blog.

  4. I read your book ‘memoirs of a teenage amnesiac’ and it is wonderfully amazing and it is my favorite book so far
